I gues this is what you'd call slapstick comedy? HARHARHAR-HARDY-HARHAR. Ok. Seriously, here we have former Nashville Predator and 15th overall pick in the 2004 NHL entry draft Alexander Radulov. He's playing for the KHL's Ufa Salavat Yulaev and clearly has just had a frustrating shift. So far, nothing unusual here. Until he casually turns to his right and THWACKS one of his coaches in the FACE with a backhand. Guy didn't even say anything. Just... THWACK!
Clearly this guy didn't grow up with those coaches who throw water bottles and sticks and threaten physical harm to eight-year-olds. What are they teaching kids about respect over there? First Ovechkin, now this. Who will think of the coaches?!?
Or maybe I'm all wrong here. First of all that coach could've whispered an insult under his breath. Something involving Radulov's mother and his lack of success on the last shift. who knows? That would make this Bashkortostan backhand the hockey verison of the Glove Slap.
Looks a little bit like an accident, because he puts his arm up as to say "Sorry!" even though it was a very in-sincere apology if so. The guy's ego is pretty big for a failure in the NHL.
it doesnt really look like an accident, but he did put his hand up in an apoligetic way, so maybe he meant to hit someone else? and it doesnt look like he was laughing after, he looked mad, but the guy beside him laughed.
Pissed, happy or whatever that does not give a grown man the right to hit anyone or anything with a hockey stick and he should be charged regardless of he said she said - they have to get their emotions in check because people are being seriously hurt by it all.
Pretty obvious it was meant towards someone behind the coach. At the beginning, you can just catch a shot of him having swung the other way prior to swinging towards the coach's side.
Seemed like he repositioned his stick, looked to see where the coach was, double checked to see if he wasn't looking, then torqued his body to hit him hard. I'd say it eas deliberate, but who knows, perhaps the coach was out of line. Either way, you shouldnt hit old people with sticks.
What is it with this attitude among hockey fans today that excessively aggressive and immature behaviour is Ok and a normal part of the game? The game is seriously lacking in class today.
Another piece of evidence to confirm that Russian players have no respect for anyone, but themselves. Not the kind of player that I want on my team, so please stay, or go play (Ovie), in the KHL,
I'm a female but if someone hit me like that with all those sticks around he would have one wrapped around his neck and another with the shape of his helmet in the center.
It clearly connects with his chin/neck, however the butt end of his stick hits the bench which prevents Radulov from getting the full intent behind the strike. (Durpdurp yourself, Jay)
It's obviously intentional. He looks to see where the coach is, turns again to look at his intended target then swings, afterwards playing it off like it was incidental contact so he has plausible deniability.
PS. KHL can barely afford plexiglass between the ice and the stands, there's no way they're coughing up cash for a barrier between players bench and the coaches standing behind them.
The barrier is in front of the camera, not in back of the player. This looks completely accidental. He looks, yes, but he does not turn far enough to see the guy right behind him. That is why he waved apologetically and the coach didn't say anything.
TYPICAL...NO ACCIDENT HERE FANS. THIS GUYS A TOTAL JACKASS, MAKES THE GOOD PLAYERS LOOK BAD THAT HAVE TO PUT UP WITH HECKLERS AND TRASH TALKERS. MAYBE HE SHOULD GET A NICE SLAP IN THE YAP WITH THE SAME STICK...YOUR A COMPLETE DICKHEAD.

Obviously he was reacting to the crowd, at the start of the clip he his the glass to hisleft then swings around to hit the other side. I have seen players react like this tons when someone is egging them on. Unfortunately the coach got caught in the crossfire. Though he was a jerk after and didn't apologize properly I still think it was accidental.
There's no barrier. Look again. He swings, connects with him on the lower right jaw, the coach reacts, then touches his jaw where he was hit. HIS HEAD ALSO MOVES. You armchair Sherlocks need some glasses.

Hey vito, that was the lameist thing I have ever heard or read. That was lame :( I sure hope you are not a leader of something like boyscouts.
To me, it didn't look as an accident but Alexander hit his coach purposely. I watched the video closely 10 times and noticed that he turned his head and looked his coach first; then swung the stick very hard to where his coach stands.
All of you posters made an opinion off of a 6 sec. video?! Man, I've replayed it 5-6 times and still can't make heads or tails of the situation. Much ado about nothing as Bill Shakespeare might've said.
Looks as if Rads is pissed off at some heckler. Swings to the left then to the right hitting the coach. No glass there people! Must be having a bad day. Needs some control management training. Maybe a time out would help. Poor little boy. want a candy? awwwww
People -- get a grip and watch the video a couple of times!! It is totally accidental -- the player was banging his arm into the back of the bench and hitting the coach was ACCIDENTAL. Good grief --- non-story here!!

he clearly looks and then swings the whole arm back and whacks the guy in the face ON PURPOSE(emphasis here not shouting)...what a tool is right and he should be kicked out of the game period...no excuse whatever...even if it looks like he apologised...its ok to whack someone with a stick and then treat it as normal?..I DONT THINK SO..
what kind of message is that teaching our kids in this kind of sports or any kind?..sad really..
This time look at the COACH's reaction.... asshole or not, Radulov hardly touched the coach.... he's a pro and has GREAT stick control, so what started looking like it was going to be a smash turned out to be a feint/touch... maybe it was sped up.... same as one of us thowing a fake punch and ending up just barely touching the other... NO plastic between coaches and players, NO need to... NO pro team allows players to hit coaches!!
Hard to say much conclusively as the short video is out of context. However, from what is there, to start, I can't see a glass barrier between the player and the coach, but...it seems as if Radulov has already swung his stick out at something behind him to his left, then he turns and swings out again to his right. Regardless, look closely at the swing and the coach...the stick doesn't actually make contact with the coach. Besides that, Radulov's swing is pretty hard. No one could get whacked or clipped in the face or neck or shoulder that hard and not be hurt and react accordingly. The coach seems surprised and reacts defensively after the fact, yes, but he in no way reacts as if he is injured or in pain. If the stick had indeed whacked him that hard, he would immediately be doubled over in pain (anyone would, no matter how tough)...for that matter, just think of players' reactions when getting high-sticked in the face on the ice. As for anything else, no one can really say from this short video.
The glass is between the camera and the player's bench, not between the player and the coach. and ther's no question he did it on purpose. Have any of you actually even been on a hockey bench? He looks directly at the coach and then whacks him. You think the coach is rubbing his face because he's checking his shave?
Oh My, how dumb are you all? Obviously someone in the crowd behind was screaming against his team or him and the player had a fit of frustration by bashing his stick at the plexi to shut them up! The coach just happened to catch a bit of the stick and was completely unharmed. Notice how suprised the player was as he waves a sign of sorry right after the hit. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, He had no intention of hitting the coach. The coach was lucky though! END OF STORY
To all you judgemental idiots.
First : Sites like this love to create controversy.
Second : We have no idea what was said or done prior to the incident.
Third : If the author had proof the player was instigated he would not say so because it would kill his headline.
So before any of you get on your high horse, The coach, the team management and the League all have the option to address this, wether it be handled by the league or if the coach feels the cops should be involved. Who the Hell are you people to be shouting... ''He should be charged'' ?
And as April wrote so simply well put. The coach doesn't seem phased by it. So why the hell are all you people phased by it while sitting in your living room surfing the web?
Come on guys:
#1 he was upset
#2 he had no idea coach was behind him
#3 he wanted to slam his stick somewhere out of anger perhaps on the glass where the fans are but unfortunately coach was behind him at the wrong place and a wrong time. lol..
I have played professional hockey 8 yrs, last week i through my stick into the bench at practice, because i was frusteratated, i ended up hitting my athletic trainer. This was a case of frusteration and nothing to do with the coach, the coach knows it too, you think he would stand there like an oak tree if he didnt know that. Most of the comments on this blog are a joke, written by people who never played. This guy wouldnt even be playing anymore if he was capable of this sort of action towards a coach, he would have been weeded out a long long time ago, like a s junior player. It a frusterating game, players know it and coaches know it, to play in the khl you need to be just as well disiplined as the nhl and probably more skilled.... to think anyone could reach that level and carry with them the capacity to attack a coach is ignorant, hockey is not basketball, the road is tougher and longer and you are socialised to be a man from an early age, not braugth in off the street in the ghetto because you have a 42 inch verticle.

Failure...? I think not...
2004 NHL First round pick
2006 QMJHL Scoring Leader and Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year
Third in scoring on the Preds in 2007-8 (at 21 years old)
Current - leading scorer and Assistant Captain on the defending KHL championship team (at 25 years old)
... and pi$$ed off when things aren't going well on the ice... (a good quality in my book)
He just needs to work on his shooting percentage... when he's sitting on the bench...

Looks like an accident. The coach doesn't seem phased by it and he puts his hand up and apologizes.
