(rendition of Allen High School's new football stadium)

As many American school boards continue to deal with the fall-out of the recession -- school closures, massive budget cuts -- it's nice to see that somethings don't change. Like football in Texas.

Allen High School in Texas received approval on Monday from its school board to build an 18,000-seat football stadium, with construction costs expected to reach upwards of $60 million. USA Today reports that the new stadium will be the fifth-largest football HIGH SCHOOL stadium in the state. The school's current stadium was built in 1976 with 7,000 seats.

Allen, TX resident and mother of a player Jo Hudson told USA Today, "Last year and this year, I could hardly get a seat in the stands. After you get done with the band (670 members), the cheerleaders, the extra groups, the student body (5,049 enrollment in grades 9-12, according to the state association), there's not a lot of seats left."

In the same article, Chester E. Finn Jr., president of DC education think tank Thomas B. Fordham Institute said, "That's Texas for you. This is, of course, ridiculous in a period of tight money, and the explanation will be that this is dedicated money and can't be spent on other things. … But I'm not a bit surprised. If it were Indiana, it would be a basketball arena."

While it does sound a tad batsh*t insane, if you compare it to hockey in Canada, it's not complete lunacy in terms of demand. Many Canadian Hockey League juniors are high school-aged and play in arenas seating close to 20,000. Of course, those rinks aren't usually built on the school board budget. I guess in Texas the Three Rs are reading, 'riting and running backs.

totally insane , i,m sorry a high school with a arena wrong wrong wron especially with tight budgets

59.6 million that school district is a gd joke , you got people who can,t read or write well and that money would be best saved for a real education not football 101 where if there big and can,t spell there on the team , again your a joke

they'll make there money back from ticket sales, concessions plus they will probably get a nice sponsor as well

Hey, show them some respect for their recessionary retraint. As the article states, it's only the FIFTH largest high school football stadium in the state. It's not like they even tried to be Top 3... Very understated.

shut up jim

Welcome to George Bush's home state. This is lunacy but its what these people want, so have it. Football is more important than reading, writing or Hurricane Katrina...

40 million citizens with no health care, the highest infant mortality rate in the developed world, illiteracy an empidemic, failing transportation infrastructure and a national debt that is unpayable..is it not comforting to know that they have their priorities in order!

Mom in Allen, Tx- we have smart kids, tons of scholarships and there is nothing wrong with a stadium that our Eagles deserve. You should see our state rings!

james: i love how you say you got people who cant read or write yet i read your comment and see crazy spelling and grammar errors. LOL MAN, pot meet kettle

everything in Texas is BIG, including their HEADS. Too bad 'brains' are not included in the BIG HEADS....

Well golleee, hyuk hyuk, we gots ourselves a reel smart country here don't we?

Whoever got the idea that "many" Canadian hockey league juniors play in 20,000 seat stadiums has his/her head in the sand. We have such a team here in our city (20 teams in the province of Ontario league with three of those teams located in the USA) and the building capacity is a bit over 7,000 people. It is considered one of the larger ones in the league.

While a good share of these kids are in high school, many are in college or university, as you can play in this league until the age of 20. And it is not one school... the league is closer to pro hockey, which is why it is still the best "breeding ground" for NHL teams.

The vast majority of our high school teams play in the public arenas which might hold 500 people at best. They don't have dedicated facilities.

Just thought you might like to know

it's funny that all countrys have problems with money. and how to help there people in need ,but when it comes to spending money on stadiums for sports there's no problems, i guess in the end they all can live in the new stadium. our taxes will go higher

It appears only one person responding above really "gets" it. The bevy of revenues generated from football and other non football events (concerts etc.) will pay for a lot of other things that the school board has on their priority list and has no money for...sorry, folks...those who provide the dedicated money for this are examples of capitalism at it's finest. I kind of think those with the $$ should decide to whom and how they wish to donate.

What happened to taking care of the homeless and less fortunate families. I'm sure Texas isn't exempt from this type of needed help. You can put 60mil into a football stadium but probably have people living on the streets .......some of those who could be the next up and coming football player but oh lets see.......he doesn't have a house or near enough food.

The only time high school aged canadian hockey players play in oversized arenas is when they are playing in ALREADY BUILT arenas that were built for NHL players , and even then, they have to rent the spaces from the owners ..

NO Wonder the states is such a messed up place. That counbtry is laughing stock around the world.. and here's just one more reason. I'm sure the homeless and the sick living in Texas are just super thrilled about the stadium. wow, texas ..you remind me of a spoiled rich kid with no thought about any realities in life. ...just yourself. hmmm....this explains a lot.

You know we do get smug up here. I have lived in Texas and believe me, this is not that unusual? Football rules in Texas and high school sports in the US are as popular as professional sports? In a place where 90% of the student body will show up for a game, drill squad and band members can top 800 and the games are front page news this is standard fare. And those 16000 that show up for each game will include all races and income levels. It would sure be nice to see a high school basketball game in Moose Jaw draw like that.

Shear lunacy. And what percentage of these football players are illiterate, a good number. Then they go on to university and get handed a diploma which cheapens it for those that acutally worked and studied for it. Put the money to education not frills. A basketball game might be popular in Moosejaw but that's the only thing happening that week.
Any revenues that come from these facilities get plowed back into the football program not the school or the community.

In Canada if 200 show up to a HS game it's an event. In the US the fans help support whole school programs without having to go to public trough. Let's not be smug, would you pay to see a HS sports event in your home town, probably not: when is the last time most of the posters went to a HS event - never after graduating would be the probable answer. This stadium will generate millions for the school.

$60 million wasted on a high school football stadium is peanuts compared to what the State of Texas spends on useless standardized tests for its students. Oh well, no kid left behind and every kid gets a seat for the game...

Is this a job creation project? What is the ROI? When do the uneducated reap a reward? The questions just keep coming.....

to quote from a character in the old t.v. show "Laugh In"..."very interesting, but stupid", ( Arte Johnson as a WW11 German soldier, hiding behind a bush)......

A Country is only as good as how they treat their poor and disadvantaged...priorities,where are they?

Hate to break it to you but growing up in Allen for twenty years I never saw one homeless person. Maybe before you make your assumptions you should realize Allen consistently is awarded for its academics and is also a very well off area where people are more than willing to contribute their taxes to improve the city. Allen will consistently draw that number of fans for a game on a Friday night. How is that going to affect their education?

And Texas can't afford new science textbooks with all that God-hatin' evilution so they'll have to make do with "Of Pandas and People" that the church group bought and donated.

no wonder Americans are idiots, they would rather play sports than learn to read and write. If you need to have bake sales to buy new books and desks i think the admin department is lacking in brains, they must have gone to school there. How about this have a bake sale to build the stadium. Canadians are so much more intelligent than the hicks down there.

quit knocking TEXAS,what do you think the idiots are dong in TORONTO, going to build a 3 story ice rink that has n3 levels of rinks , how stupid is that to the tune of 95 million

Some comments here are totally uninformed and reflect the intelligence of the writers. In the US and Texas there are thousands of academic scholarships handed out because of the huge amount of dollars the athletic programs bring in. Also look back and just remember some of the great athletes that have become great business leaders, politicians and coaches and mentors to these young men and women. Please don't bring OJ up.

Folks, we here in Canada border on the other side of absurdity, with complete obscurity, when it comes to High School sports. Our kids go to schools where the facilities are often sub- par and the coaching for the most part is minimal. Ministries of Education, School Boards and Administrations couldn't give a damn about sports and the life lessons they teach kids. If a school doesn't have a coach, oh well no program I guess! No big deal. A teacher-coach doesn't even have to have any qualifications to be behind the bench, other than a pulse. Our schools could really be the center of excelence, with high performance, educationally sound athletic programs, but they go largely unnoticed and ignored. Schools could build community like they do in the U.S. and involve alumni, etc. to make the schools places where kids and people want to be and feel like they belong. In over 20 years of teaching and coaching High School Sports here in Canada I've seen amazing kids exhibit world class performances. Those kids were motivited and had outstanding coaches. For every kid who is afforded that unique opportunity there are so many more who don't have a coach or an athletic program to even be able to strive to do their best. For example, take a look at the number of High Schools in the GTA who do not offer football. The number of schools without football is much higher than the schools that offer it.
Instead of looking down our noses with contempt for their choices perhaps we should re-evaluate some of ours as well.

good news, kick that economic slowdown right between the goal posts.

The City of Toronto wants to build a hockey arena complex with four rinks stacked on top of each other at the waterfront.

The 4 stacked hockey rinks in Toronto is projected to cost $88 million which means it will cost $150 million by the time they're finished.

After reading some of these comments i feel ashamed to be a Canadian! When did we get to be such a smug nation of 'haters'? If they can afford this stadium, why knock them? All this blah blah blah about the poor and homeless are still going to be there regardless of the stadium. I think we should just be amazed that the high schools in the US have such a loyal and supportive fan base.

I'm a Canadian -And I love Texas...You guys go ahead and build that damn arena. I think it's great. I'm sorry 'bout my fellow countrymen - We have a lot of idiots up here....too!=R=

i think this football arena is a very good idea! because honestly people may not see it but sports is just another way to teach people how to work together and acheive great thigs as a whole! this football field will bring the classes that play on it together in ways people will never understand. people should stop just looking at the price and look at the whole picture. there is nothing wrong with having something nice. yeah the money could honestly go towards something else but then people would fight about why its going to that and not something else. so honestly give it a rest. i support this idea 110%

and anyone that doest like it can eat a dick

I went to this high school, so these comments are making me laugh my ass off. This city is anything but hicks and rednecks. Sure there are some, just like there is in any other city on Earth. Allen has a ton of high tech companies, the schools are great, and no, we don't ride around on horses as tumbleweeds blow down the street. Allen is a beautiful, modern city and it's saddening to see the abundance of smarmy ignorance in this comment section.

Also, a lot of you act like we're blowing all our money on this thing. Allen is a pretty wealthy city; it's also ranked in the top 10 safest cities in the U.S. I don't even particularly care for football. I never played on any school team, and I rarely went to the games. But the article is true, the old "stadium" we have is a bunch of shitty, rickety bleachers that can't hold half the people who come to the games.
