A select group of NHL GMs get set to meet up tomorrow in the sunny confines of Boca Raton, Florida to discuss an acceptable definition of a "head shot" in pro hockey. You can be damn sure they'll take a break from white pants and straw hats long enough to be watch this hit by Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke on Boston's Marc Savard from yesterday a few times.
Is this a head shot or simply a blindside legal check? A case can be made for either, though I'm pretty sure I know where Savard stands on this one. No penalty was called, and some will say Cooke should've been handed a two-minute sit-down while others are calling for a full-on suspension. Until the NHL outlines what is what and makes the rule for hits to the head less ambiguous, this type of debate will continue, ad nauseam.
Cooke has always been a dirty player. I'm looking forward to the day when the tables are turned and he's on the receiving end of one of those cheap shots. I hope it's hard enough to end his career. He has to go before he ends a legitamate hockey players career.
John C: you're a moron. What person in their right mind would wish harm on someone in such a callous and stupid manner?
If you look closely, you'll see that Cooke's shoulder impacted on Savard's shoulder and Savard's own shoulder pad hit him in the head. He wasn't taken to the hospital and probably won't miss any games. Head shots need to be stopped but it's the players who need to stop them and not the league. It's so hypocritical of the Player's Union whining and crying to the league to stop head shots when the GMs and owners aren't the ones commiting the infractions. If they want head shots to end it's up to them alone. Penalties won't stop it. They never stopped fighting or tripping or slashing or boarding so how do you think they'll stop head shots?
That was clearly headhunting. Cooke could have gone shoulder to shoulder for a good clean hit, instead its a borderline elbow on a player who has no way to defend himself, and likely had no idea the hit was coming. I love open ice hits when they are clean but deliberately targeting someone's head when they are helpless is not hockey
Clearly a headshot...although it didn't look to be an elbow. No matter, it was an intent to inure with a blindside hit to the head after the puck was released.
Suspension time...
The BoG/owners are just as much at fault for this and other hits to the head by refusing to agree on outlawing headshots. What do they care since its not them out there risking injury?
How many times has it got to be said , get rid of the defensive equipment. The equipment that players are wearing today is just too hard. It is not designed to protect the players , but to injure your opponent . When will the league and the players mandate that the suppliers of this crap do something positive and design the stuff to protect players and not put them out of the game .Cooke would not try such a callous , disrespectful , stupid hit if it hurt him as much as it did Savard .
This Cooke has a history of this, what if it was Crosby been carried off. Reminds me of that idiot Ulf who started that Penguin tradition of cheap shot artists!!! Cooke should get 10 to 20 games period!!!
Maxim Lapierre gets 4 games for pushing someone into the boards side first and I bet this goon gets nothing. It all depends who you play for , no one in the league wants to penalize Crosby's team because he's the darling of the league .
diego your a complete tit. it wasnt shoulder to shoulder hit. clear headshot. pens fan i take it. frontrunner. by the way i am a habs fans, so i hate the bruins.
This kind of crap is ridiculous. It's just like The Emperor's New Clothes. Everyone thinks if you spin this somehow by saying it's a good check, that somehow makes it a good check. LOOK at it on the replay. Cooke is an idiot and an animal if he thinks that's how you play hockey. His coach is a moron if he thinks he should have someone like that on the ice. Hockey fans have become totally ignorant if they think this somehow can have a justifiable place in the sport of hockey. Send this guy out the door, and for god's sake let's get back to some actual hockey on the ice instead of some idiotic facsimile of a futuristic gladiator sport from a B-grade movie.
Clearly a head shot, but didn't Gordie Howe make a liveing out of these kind of hits.....or the Philly Flyers of the 70's......but for some reason in the past 2 years it's become a major issue......its hockey....get use to it....people get hurt , just like in football...baseball....basketbal....soccor.....it happens..
regardless of intentional or not there has to be an automatic suspension- we played hockey before, we can look away before the check but we know where were going to hit someone. right?
I disagree with you Jack. Old time hockey of the 60's and 70's was a completely different animal. The equipment was different, more for protection than as weaponry, and there was no instigator rule. Those players policed themselves. A player dishing out a cheap shot could expect to be in the dentist's chair the next morning having the remains of some teeth removed from his gums. Cooke can expect a suspension, but with his 2.4 million dollar contract, he can afford some holiday time. What really are the consequences?
A retired professional hockey player lifting a child or grandchild can expect to feel some pain from old injuries sustained playing a fast full contact game. Repeated concussion (brain injury) might prevent him from recognizing that child. How wrong is that?
well said Andy....and I can agree to a point...they did police themselves, and they still should....but with the insigator rule they can't....and as far a concussions I completely agree......but in the 60's and 70's it wasn't a "concussion"...a player simply got their bell rung and went back out to play the next game.....that was just as wrong......as I said before its hockey and injuries happen, no matter how minor or how severe its going to happen....in my day Cookes hit was just a good open ice hit.....
What a stinking game hockey has become. I believe it should be banned, for its lack of sportsmanship and for such lean pickings of sportsmen and talent.
think its about time Cooke left the NHL... this isnt the first time or first team he has had trouble with. You just keep benching him and giving him fines he learns nothing. He doesnt belong in the NHL anymore time for Cooke to go..maybe take up boxing or another sport where you are alowlled to hurt the other person.but not in hokcey have the not learnt a thing since Bert and and Barshear????It doesnt go in my hockey game..He has family..they all do.Stop them getting away with dirty hits.
I like my hockey as much as the next and the good clean hard checks well thats part of the game along with the few fights..this is not part of OUR game in Canada.
This is the 3rd time for this guy... and the NHL has very little again.. if the NHL was serious on the 3rd incident the player should be suspended for remainder of season and playoffs, 50k fine to player, 100k to team, current game being played is forfeited. Watch how fast this kind of deliberate attempt to injure would be stopped.
After several replayes I noticed Savard played the puck. But it was an elbow, not a shoulder hit. But blind side hit should be outlawed. There was no good reason for that type of hit. It was not needed Savard was out of the play where he was.
Hey Lornet ... Go smoke another one man. When you start talking about pussy type hockey fans, all I can think is you must be a Pissedburg fan. Probably only signed on since they got Crosbaby too. (That's another story) I've been a HOCKEY fan for over 40 years and I've seen it all. Gordie Howe would elbow you, never blind side you, and his elbow pads would get you a bloody nose, not a concussion. The Broad Street Bullies were famous for slashes, high sticks and fighting, but they knew they were in for a bench clearing if they went too far. Wendell Clark always hit shoulder to chest, never head hunting until he dropped the mits. Back in the original six era, you rarely saw a player crush someone into the boards from behind. Never hit a guy in the head seconds after he delivered a shot. So give us a break Lornet......go study the game a bit longer before you try to give us your lame "Not head hunting, Pussy fans excuse"
Funny, I can't get into watching NHL hockey after 2 weeks of awesome Olympic hockey. An open ice hit is what Ovie laid on Jagr, clean, no leading with the shoulder or the elbow or head hunting. It was a pretty cheap shot by Cooke on Savard. Too bad the NHL doesn't adopt some of the IIHF rules, we wouldn't see guys get broken ankles on no touch icing, hits like Cooke's would of probably meant an automatic suspension for that game instead of letting him continue in the game last night. Everyone is right saying the equipment is now more used for offensive purposes instead of protection. Jack said it best when I guy got hit back in the 60's or 70's he got his bell rung because the equipment wasn't made out of hard plastic like it is today. The guys back then didn't wear helmets either so there may of been a little more respect amongst players, unlike today when you have 30 teams and probably enough skilled players to make a league of say 24.
The entire NHL, managers, coaches, trainers are 100% to blame for these goon players
and their talentl-less displays of "hockey?". The owners do not want, nor does that air-head Gary Bettman, to clean up the pathetic performance of the goons that are in the NHL. This is not talent, just un-educated goons who do not know anything else about how to make a decent, honourable living, and must only rely on their dirty tactics of goonery to try and impress somebody. The owners, and Gary Bettman DO NOT HAVE THE BALLS to clean up the game. Perhaps one day there will be an incident so severe that the owners, the instigater, the team, the manager, Gary Bettman and the NHL will be sued for millions. That day is coming.
I don't know what you or the referees were watching, but it's clearly an elbow to the head. Savard had just clearly shot the puck, so it was not interference. But it was a definite headshot and if you can't see the elbow you are in Scott Stevens denial. Scott Stevens made a hall of fame career out of border line hits that may have started with his shoulder but always ended with his elbow, and were always aimed at the opponents head. Seriously if you are still denying elbow you need a better computer. Take the slomo and go stop and start frame by frame as Cooke with elbow positioned at Savards head level deliberately comes in contact with his head and watch as the offending weapon (elbow) has follow through after hitting the head.
Cooke is a piece of $hit. He brings nothing to this team but cheap. However, with that being said he is a marked man because so many NHL players are commenting on this hit. Also, If this were to happen to Crosby, you can bet there would have been a suspension already. I like the 3rd man in rule. Because if you play cheap don't expect big brother to come save you butt. If you dish it out then you better be able to take it. And if you cant defend yourself then you should not be out there. Bruins did not go after Crosby because Crosby did not do anything cheap. I don't believe the " well they took our good guy out so we need to take theirs out". NO go after the pc of shit that took your guy out. Or any other goons they have that try to be the hockey police for their team. These are Athletes. Only in this sport will you see somebody get a broken nose and then is out for the next period. If it were any other sport they would be out a couple of games ( ie. baseball, basketball etc..)
Lornet...You're the pussy. Pittsburgh fan are ya? Crosby fan are ya? What part of the video are you blocking out.. He clearly gave Savard an elbow to the head. If someone did that to Crosby you'd be bawling your eyes out. And Diego you're a moron wearing blinders if you can't see the elbow. I'm still wishing for him to be run out of the league. I don;'t care how it's done.
Well I guess you get what you get . All this goon stuff comes from to many players that cannot play the game. This is a direct Result of expansion . NO ONE TO BLAME BUT THE NHL.And people like Betman who line there pockets from the profits .Instead of getting the cream of the crop. 2/3rds of the players playing today would have never gotten to the NHL in the six original. And untill they start Dropping some of these teams that are loosing millions each year it will never change .So come on Betman get rid of these teams and get more teams in Canada where there is a market .
IF THAT IDIOT PLAYED ON THE SAME ICE AS ME HE WOULD NEED A POLICE ESCORT TO GET BACK TO THE SAFETY OF HIS HOTEL ROOM - THROW THE PUNK OUT OF THE GAME BEFORE SOMEONE GETS IN TROUBLE FOR WRECKING HIM
This happens more and more. What do you expect , americans involved in the league have turned it into a sort of blood sport. NO athlete should be forced to put his long-term physical and cerebral health at risk for some club owner, who is in it for the cash.
Only two options as I see it, Break away from the present administration and form a Totally Canadian league, or position the Mounties at every game and arrest the first bone-head that smears our national game.
Savy released the puck and was looking at the net. His body was in a lower position, obviously his head lower than normal. Cooke should have backed off right the. Savy was no threat with the play at the time of the hit! He wasn't even close to the net Therefore it was an unecessary hit......therfore an unecessary injury. What if it was Lucic on Crosby?.......Hymm Definetly a suspension!!!!
Some day , someone's going to die on the ice .This is NHL , not UBC.
Players who deliver game or career ending blows should be suspended the same length of time that the injured player takes to recuperate plus a hefty fine of player ,coaches ,GM's and owners. . Unfortunately some of these concussions are life lasting.
May Reg Fleming rest in peace
I don't want to take hitting out of hockey, but I mean good clean hits that make you go WOW the same wow when you smile inside when you see a great goal or save. If you want the head shots or knee on knee hits to stop give the refs video replay of the incident so they can take the offender out of the game immediately and apply the proper penalties and make their reports. As regards the NHL review, the best penalty that could be handed out would be that the offender would be suspended without pay for the length of time the injured player is out of action. If that would not make a goon think twice then he does not belong in the league. and Cook does not belong in the league. I am a Habs fan and I only thought that Lapierre had made a stupid and selfish play after I saw the replay. Four games without play might make him realize how stupid and would give him pause to think on how he might lose his job to the guy brought up to replace him.
The new rule should include that the person who gives the hit should be out twice as long as the injured player. That would slow things down a bit. Maybe even a graduated ladder of sort; first time offender....same amount of games, second time....double, thirdtime....triple amount of games etc etc........
Hockey is an old persons sport...the old school fighting is so.o.o. 50's....and whats with 80 some games?? and playoffs for months?? Thank God Canada has a 100% league at home with the "CFL"...unlike hockey it's run and operated by in Canada...ONLY!!!!!

Ouch! dirty hit imo.. head hunting at it's finest.
Also, hasn't Cooke already been suspended twice this season for similiar hits?!
Brutal.

The puck was gone. What horse - (*&(*&.
The NHL could save a lot of cash. There'd be a lot of 'economies of scale' by having just one set of management, for both the NHL & WWE.
The WWE draws big crowds and lots of cash too. They're just more honest about what the attraction is based on.

That looked like a bad hit, but I dont think there was any ill intent... fair challenge, player was just in an awkward position when he got hit.
Pure, natural, organic play. Eat it.
