Well, the Hockey Gods couldn't have written a better ending -- or more marketable one -- with Sidney Crosby scoring the overtime goal to beat the U.S. 3-2 and give Canada the gold medal.
Jonathan Toews opened the scoring with almost seven minutes left in the first, knocking in a Rick Nash rebound. It was the only goal in a first period of fast end-to-end hockey.
Both teams came out hard in the second, but Canada looked confident and incontrol on the power play and penalty kill. Corey Perry (above) beat American goalie Ryan Miller from the slot, to put Canada up 2-0. Luongo's Vancouver teammate Ryan Kelser put the U.S. on the board, with just over seven minutes left in the second, to tighten the hometeam crowd's collective sphincter to just shy of diamond production levels.
That lasted the entire third period, as Canada seemed to back off and play protect-the-lead. Then! New Jersey Devil star Zach Parise shocked the deafening crowd by tying the score with 24 seconds left in the game, after the U.S. pulled Ryan Miller to have the extra attacker.
Canada switched back to offensive mode for overtime, until Crosby won it all.
With this win, Canada earns its 14th gold medal of the 2010 Winter Games, setting an Olympic record for most gold medals won by a single nation in the winter Olympics.

Was there some agreement between the USA team not to smile. The USA women were not very happy, but the USA men - that was pure ignorance. Well here's hoping Ron Wilson and Brian Burk can bring the same excitement to the Maple Leafs.

Oh man! That was the best time for Crosby to get his offensive surge! Miller was great, but playing all tournament wore him out, and Crosby and Iginla capitalized on it! All of Team Canada played great, and now we've won twice in North America! Fact: In both games, Canada wore white jerseys. Coincidence?

It is too bad that Canadian cannot win with more grace and dignity. You all have such huge chips on your shoulders that you have to bash the Americans every chance you get. Some of you were gracious and kind but overall, Canadians are mean toward Americans. There are more Americans living in Canada than any other minority group, over 1 million. If Canadians bashed Chinese or East Indians the way they bash Americans they would be called racists. Idiots like Rick Mercer get away with proliferating this hatemongering. I dont know how many of you saw the clip that Tom Browkaw of NBC did on Canada but I must say that it was wonderful. It made Canada seem like a nice place full of nice people. Well the media here isnt nice and in almost 22 years of living here I have to say that I have never seen a portrayal of Americans by the Canadian media that was nice. I am sick of this country and how you think you are so much better than Americans when all you are is a third world country being run by a Nazi right now. Good Luck and Good Riddance.
Posted by: Alice | Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 08:06 PM
The US played a great game, but why can't they just be humble in defeat? Kesler's comments just shows the lack of class the Americans are unfortunately known for. Not all of them, but far too many.

Alice, let me try to explain it to you. We Canadians have been living in the shadow of the USA for so long, bombarded with your hype, your media, your constant 'we-are-best at everything, your world of superlatives. Perhaps we are caught up in the patriotism of our Games and that comes across as offensive to you. But please, allow us that now, because we have had to put up with your nauseating flag-waving chest-thumping shout-it-from-the-rooftops patriotism forever. We are celebrating and reinforcing the fact that we are NOT American, and we ARE different. Open your eyes and don't try to single us out - the whole WORLD dislikes you for any number of good reasons. What you haven't forced on the world you have BOUGHT. Just as you continue to buy up Canada. It is truly sad there are THAT many Americans living here! Go back to watching NBC, we don't want to hear you whining here, you bitter little yankee hypocrite. Good riddance b*tch.

Way to go Canadian atheletes! You have made us all so very proud. But least we not forget to recognize the abilities and efforts of all the other nations who sent their best, as if it not for the greatness of these other atheletes who would we have to compete against. It was that there was such a closeness in their abilities that make our atheletes victories so much sweeter. Well done all atheles of the 2010 winter olypics, well done.

Alice Alice Alice. You poor pathetic thing. It must be really hard for an American living in Canada for 22 years to be living in a thrid world country. Hmmm with the best health care system in the world. If you really don't like living here, go back home and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Your scathing comments on Canada are so typical of an American. It is no wonder most other countries in the world dont like the USA.
You mention Rick Mercer is a hate mongerer, well just take a look at Steven Colbert. He has taken more shots at Canada than anyone else. I guess it is a hard pill to swallow when Canada took home the most gold medals in these Olympic Games.
Your comment that this country is run by a Nazi is again typical of an igornant American. Pack your bags honey and go home. It is people like you that cause others to think so lowly of the USA

some of these comments coming from small minds, well you have won the gold but you have lost respect from the international audience. yes you own the game of hockey and now you can go into your backyard and play because no one gives a shit. if u.s. would have won the game of hockey would have the respect of other important sports but don't get emotional here because i'm looking it from someone who doesn't give a hoot about the n.h.l.but loves the olympic hockey and if hockey is to survive it needs to change from the fighting to the skill and speed like the olympic.

alice you have hit the nail on the head, canada is a second rate country with no culture to hold them together except playing hockey. winning against the americans is breaded in their genes. to shut these people up is very simple close all the satalite jobs here and see how this second rate of a country will be back in the stone age. obama should direct all their agencies to buy american only. i have dual citizenship and live in toronto and i also sick and tired of the media here. these yahoos writing comments about who owns the ice and f-u americans let me say this i was hoping that the final was between two great countries russia and the great u.s.a. not this two bit of a country that has to remind itself how proud it is to be canadian, talk to quebecers who have more athletes in the olympic than the rest of the country and without them canada are loosers.
Posted by: john5 | Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 10:29 PM
Hey John5.
Clearly you are stinging from the US being defeated today in the gold medal game of men's hockey at the Olympics.
It IS interesting to note that this "second rate", "two bit" country (as you refer to it) has never lost a war to the US. Now that's beating you at your own game.
Hurts doesn't it.
