Well, THAT was dramatic, non? Now that we know just who will be wearing the maple leaf in Vancouver this February, it's time to start that age-old Canadian custom of second-guessing. The know-it-alls who put together that disastrous collection of players that went to Italy four years ago have given Canadian hockey fans more than enough reason to eye any international roster with many a raised eyebrow, but this time it's Stevie Y! He's not an arrogant old codger, but a guy who seems genuinely interested in what others have to say. And let's face it, no matter who was named to the team, there was always going to be a raging debate because this is hockey and we're Canadian. And so we begin our contribution to the raucous howls with a statement about the blueline: Chris Pronger shouldn't be there.
OK, OK, we know Pronger is a future hall-of-famer, a dominant force, blahblahblah. But his style of play and proclivity for stupid penalties make him a bit of a risk in such a short tournament. He's proven he can dominate over an NHL season, but how well does his style translate to the Olympic game? Is his defensive abilities and veteran experience enough to make up for the exclusion of, say, Mike Green? Tough to say, but what the hell. We would've went with Green. Yes, even over Bouwmeester and Phaneuf.
Now, our Pronger hate-on might be because of straight-up stats (he leads all other Team Canada d-men with 49 PIM, putting him 6th among NHL blueliners so far this season), but part of it has to do with the Turin in 2006. We were covering the '06 Games and after, I think it was the 2-0 loss to Switzerland (to SWITZERLAND!?), Pronger was in the media area acting incredulous that he was being asked questions like, "What the hell happened out there?" and "What's wrong?" by the Canadian contingent. There was a surprising level of arrogance to his answers, one of which was of the "If it ain't broke.." variety, an attitude that summed up a lot of what was wrong with that eventual 7th-place finishing squad.
Word is that Bouwmeester was the last cut on the blueline, but if there are any regrets, it says here one will be that we didn't have the best offensive defenseman in the NHL -- and someone that knows a certain Mr. Ovechkin quite well -- on the team.
If Canada can post three goals a game (with this offense it should not br a problem) this team has been built for NHL rinks big skaters, monsters on defense and goal tending second to none. No one else has this size, speed and skill with the right amount of experience and youth. The key to this team will be Babcock Chemistry 101.

Stevie Yzerman knows his hockey, no doubt about that. It doesn't matter how much I disagree with who's on & off the list, I'll be backing our boys to the GOLD!
Posted by: Grolschman | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:19 PM
Hey maybe Pronger will get hurt in the next two months if we are lucky either way Gold for Canada in Canada is a for sure.
Posted by: stevemol | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:25 PM
i think the sid the kid should have been team captain instead of the other guy!
Posted by: gorilla71 | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:26 PM
Growing up in Windsor I adored Stevey Y through my youth... But seriously, how the heck did this team come together without Mike Fisher??? Fisher is adaptable to many lines/players. You'll see similar in Iginla and Crosby, but Heatley without Thorton and visa versa are useless. If one gets hurt, the two are kaputzky!!
Posted by: ian | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:42 PM
I agree with the picks made by Stevie and his crew. In fact there are probably another 23 Canadian NHL players who could make up a second Olympic team. Bottom line is we have the best players in the world and as a country we should appreciate that fact, instead of second guessing the selections, we should applaud them. We should also remember , these picks were made by individuals who are a lot more knowledgeable about hockey than the rest of us.

4 years ago during the last Olympics Pronger was a pylon on the ice. I watched in horror as younger/faster forwards skated circles around him. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think he’s gotten any younger. Size doesn’t matter in the Olympics especially on a larger ice surface. Sorry Stevie but you blew it on this one. Sounds like Wayne was consulted.
Posted by: Daryle | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:51 PM
phanuef and bouwmeester got shafted for the old guys and stamkos and st louis and vinnie are better than the sharks trio
Posted by: harry | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:56 PM
I really wish Y woulda went with Phaneuf over Pronger, but lets hope I'm wrong.
Posted by: Dharm | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 03:58 PM
They picked the wrong Staall , but no matter Russia will sink them .
Posted by: Gordo | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 04:11 PM
How did they miss Dave TIGER Williams !!
Posted by: Dave Castle | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 04:55 PM
how did bergeron, morrow and doughty make it what about st louis ,lecavelier ,stamkos and the highest scoring defencmen mike green and even mike fisher the dont even have chance to win
Posted by: nick | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 04:58 PM
Niedermeyer & Pronger as captain and assistant? Where is Stevie Y's head? Are we trying to field an oldtimer's team?
Daryle, great comment about the pylon. Four years later we can probably expect as much mobility as a cement block.
Also agree with Gordo, they picked the wrong Staall.

I'm probably going to get shunned for this, but I think Neidermeyer is bad decision! He's too old! Better replacement could of been Mike Green, Chris Phillips, or Jay Boumeister. Kieth and Seabrook, i'm a little iffy on. . . but good job on Doughty though. We need youth and speed to keep up with the likes of Ovechkin/Malkin ans Sedin twins.
Also HIGHLY disappointed with the decision of Bergeron AND Perry. I'm sorry, but Mike Fisher, Patrick Sharp, J. Lupul, Marc Savard, St. Louis, Stamkos would all of been better choices. I agree with the goalies though, though i hope Luongo sees no playing time (starter should be Brodeur or Fleury).
Posted by: Norris21 | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 05:47 PM
It is somewhat ironic that only one of the players picked plays in a Canadian city...oh well, maybe it doesn't mean a thing....
Posted by: T | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 05:50 PM
I do feel that Jay Boumeister and D. Phaneuf should have been better choice as defence. Furthermore, young S. Crosby should be the captain of the Canadian team.
I was very surprised that the team selected without Mike Fisher!
On the other hand, let us support the Canadian team and hope for the best out come.

Steve Y might have been a great player, but I am not impressed with the choices for Team Canada. Was Don Cherry his chief advisor? Pronger and Niedemeyer? No Fisher? Surprised they didn't ask Jean Beliveau, or Bobby Orr! Although I am still hoping for gold. Mr. y seems to have dimmed our chances. Well, at least we have the Jrs!
Posted by: Graham Turner | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 08:04 PM
With the depth Canada has it is certainly a task to pick the right 23. Goal was an easy position but Canada could field another six D with the likes of Phaneuf, Bouwmeester, Regher, Green, Campbell adn Staal that would be solid. Up front I am wondering who Patrice Begeron has a picture of naked that he would get picked over Vinny, Steven Stamkos, Brad Richards. Too bad Canada cannot field two teams as again they could present another sold second team with the above and with Savard, St. Louis. Penner, Doan, Sharp etc.
Posted by: Kevin K | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 08:22 PM
Well, as for fielding 2 teams for Canada, must we remember our 7th place finish last year? As much as I respect Steve Yzerman the only questions I have is why Patrice Bergeron over Mike Fisher and why Chris Pronger over Mike Green (who knows Ovechkin better than anyone)... Go Canada Go.
Posted by: Shippy59 | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 09:04 PM
Extremely tough job to pick "Team Canada" does not matter who you sign to the sqad there is always someone who will not be happy with your choices. Hey coaches choice to bad if you don't like it, spend 20 plus years playing at that level and you have earned the right to do so. We should have a second team playing and let all the arm chair athletes pick the tea. Wonder how they would do.??????
Posted by: John | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 10:01 PM
I don't think that Pronger is a bad pick. He has great size and ability to get shots to the net. The fire power is not a problem, I just feel there might not be enough grit up front. GO CANADA GO
Posted by: kayvee12 | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:20 PM
I don't understand why everyone is jumping on the Mike Fisher bandwagon...I agree that he can play well both ways but should not be on this team and Norris21 if you think that Chris Phillips even can be mentioned to be on this team then ur an idiot (or just an ottawa homer)...most of you people talking have no idea what your talking about and need to stop thinking that you know hockey
Posted by: Andrew | Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:48 PM
I like Penner, Lecavalier, Stamkos, Phenouf, Green, Fischer, Cleary over Morrow, Doughty, Heatley, Seabrook, Niedermeyer, Bergeron, Richards.
I hope those ommission do not bite them in the rear end, I think Gold will come down to Russia or Canada with USA as the sleeper with Miller in net and some young offensive stars like Kane, Kessel.
Posted by: eh | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 12:00 AM
Well Andrew, nothing personal, but you are either a Leaf's fan or don't watch enough hockey.... guess you agree with all the picks then... don't get me wrong, all players selected are worthy, but in my honest opinion they could have made a few changes... but what do we know...cheers
Posted by: shippy59 | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 12:32 AM
Some bad picks ...my number 1 problem is with the coach Sorry to say no gold medal for Canada
Posted by: Korn | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 12:57 AM
No Savard, Fisher, Green and Bouymeester. Instead pronger the pylon and Perry.Gold for USA or Russia. Hope I'm wrong
Posted by: corey | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 01:41 AM
YES Why is pronger there...there is no quarterback for the powerplay
also ..STEVIE HE IS TOO SLOW/OLD LIKE YOU WERE.
Posted by: BRUCE | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 02:31 AM
I think Luongo shoul not be on team. He is the most overrated player in NHL
Posted by: Paul | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 05:57 AM
Choosing a team is always difficult and controversial. You will never be right even if you win it all. Those chosen are certainly worthy and I wish them all the best Canada is in tough with the talented Russians and maybe the US gased on their goalie. Injuries can chenge the whole landscape by the time the games roll around.
Posted by: d millar | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 08:38 AM
Once again it is the good old boys club! Pronger is guaranteed to get penalized over and over allowing other quick teams to put the puck in our net. With no Doughty on the team you are missing a lot of heart!!! Don Cherry should be picking out National Team.
Posted by: Tom | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 09:18 AM
I see they changed Heatley's place of birth to make him look Canadian. He's about as Canadian as Texas.
Posted by: BP | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 09:20 AM
in case no one knows this, but we are playing on a small rink not the big euro rinks. so Progner (i can't stand him) and the other slow d men will be ok (i hope) but i like the forwards and wish Fisher could make the teem but Bergeron is a good player as well.
Posted by: eric | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Phaneuf is a bum! He gets one good hit every 2 or 3 games and scores a goal every 4 to 6 games.for the amount of ice time and the salary he is making the guy is a dud! Quit including him in Olympic conversations....
Posted by: agentdasc | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 10:34 AM
I'll let you know what i think after the games are over:) GO CANADA BRING HOME THE GOLD !
Posted by: Dave O'Neil | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Brutal,
Heatley is NOT a team player. What the hell, he ran with Spezza and now with Thorton. What the hell was Yzerman watching???? Bergeron ??? Staal??? Holy crap wake up. No Gold for Canada, I garantee... Pronger??? Slow and dumb.. Oh well Just like Canada, reward the JERKS by putting them on the team....... Maybe Heatley should be traded to Germany......
Posted by: WTF! | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Niedermeyer & Pronger should step aside and let the young guns go for it where on earth did these pics come from? both players have not done much this year to deserve this honor with Niedermeyer ready to retire anyway. Step aside guy's, do the right thing. Stevie Y always a respectful man, player, team mate but these 2 choices were wrong, simply not fair to the others who rightfully deserved to be on this team. Goes to show you there is politics in everything we do in life including hockey.
Posted by: Tommy | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:11 AM
All I can say is BRUTAL....
To many bad picks..... Pronger... SS LL OO WW
Bergeron... who???
Heatley... Selfish, slower, Just a complete Jerk, Hockey Canada should have never put this guy on the team, the only player to ever get a way with murder...TWICE...
Please remember that when Thorton, Marleau and Heatley play together they are not always against all star defenceman. They will do nothing. They are slow, they do not backcheck..... Against teams like USA, Sweden, Russia they are USELESS...
If you are going to take a tandem should have been Stamkos, St.Louis, Lecavalier
The only none problem with this team is Goaltending....
Posted by: Do_You_Know_Hockey? | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:14 AM
Maybe Ovey will finally go thru the glass on one of his silly celebrations...Russia might give them a run for their money but it'll make great hockey to see. The US will have to settle for scraps this time.

HaHA,
Yzermanov, thaks you, We are sure of a Gold Medl.
Canada Sucs.
Bye lozers,

I think most of the naysayers are forgeting that teams like this are put together with chemistry in mind as well as talent . Without that talent is a moot point . GOLD for sure !!
Posted by: bill fry | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Gretzky took all the best players at the time..... period.... and lost.
Yzerman, you need help... What where you thinking???
Then you hand it over to Babcock, er... its your problem now you say.
What you don't want to be responsible when Canada does not medal???
Hockey Canada needs to be re-evaluated.....
Don't come crying to me when we finish 8th......
I am ashamed to be Canadian....
Oh well at least we will get Gold in Curling or Freestyle Aerials...
Remember..... Canada has NEVER won a Gold medal in the Olympics on home soil, not Winter or Summer....
That will change, but not because of Mens Hockey.... Shame on you Yzerman... :( ....
Posted by: GREATNESS | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Hey Bill,
or is that Bill Fry the science guy.
Since you used a chemistry reference.
But I would say, yes you are right:
"A CHEMISTRY FOR DISASTER"
MIXED IN WITH A BIT OF SLOWNESS...

Yeah nice try,
Dany Heatley, Calgary, Alta. (this is the birth place they have)
This is what it is:
born January 21, 1981, in Freiburg im Breisgau, West Germany
However here are the actual rules:
Heatley was born in Germany to Karin and Murray Heatley, who was then playing in a German hockey league. When Murray retired from hockey, the family settled in Calgary, where Dany was raised. Because he was born in Germany and his mother is German, Dany holds a dual Canadian and German citizenship, but plays for the Canadian national team (IIHF rules mandate that a player may not switch countries once he has already competed for one, however,
Remember this:
At the end of the 2008–09 season, Heatley requested a trade from the Ottawa Senators. A deal was in place to send Heatley to the Edmonton Oilers on June 30, but Heatley refused to waive his no trade clause.
and this:
Prior to the end of the lockout, Heatley asked to be traded from Atlanta in hopes of leaving reminders of the tragic accident behind. This was unpopular with Atlanta fans, particularly as Snyder's father Graham noted that Heatley owed much to the Thrashers' organization which had particularly been extremely supportive of him during his trial and ordeal.
WHY DOES HOCKEY CANADA ALLOW THIS GUY SO MANY CHANCES????
HE IS UNGREATFUL......
AND A MURDERER......
Posted by: WTF! | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:44 AM
I think this is a well rounded team Mike Fisher yes, hard work should pay of
GO CANADA GO
Posted by: cal | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:56 AM
I really don't understand why Pronger was selected. I can understand taking Niedermayer as a 7th defenseman to add dressing room and on-ice experience, but Pronger is too slow, and takes too many dumb penalties. His "punishing" style of play is only effective in a best-of-7 series where he can where down opposition stars over multiple games.
And to those who say Phaneuf should be on the team, he is a younger carbon-copy of Pronger. My choice would be Bouwmeester over Pronger, but I wouldn't have minded Green either.
Posted by: TOCanadafan | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 12:18 PM
Too bad the probable starting goalie is an American. Stevie Y could and should have found a proud and capable CANADIAN goalie to replace Brodeur.
Posted by: kingkenneth | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 04:31 PM
Whoever is bagging on Niedermeyer is an idiot he is a great defencemen, although the other 5 i disagree with- the difference is that you need more adaptable players and Pronger is not one, Olympic ice is larger than the NHL ice which means speed is more important. Enforcers are important too which is why Pronger's on the team, but they need to balance it out as he can not skate quickly enough to compete.
Posted by: Ralph | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 05:44 PM
I agree Pronger could of/should have been left off the list for the speed weekness and
'goon/dirty' tendancies and be replaced with a Bouwmeester but....they're not playing on Olympic ice, they're playing on NHL ice sized rinks this Olympics. Should reduce his speed weekness, now I can't help with his nasty edge!
Posted by: Don | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 06:21 PM
not to offend anyone esspecially any of you self proclaimed hockey analysts out there but lets face it Niedermayer is a proven future hall of famer and he deserves to wear the C on his jersey, not to take anything away from crosby but every sports athlete folds up or has a bad week or whatever the case may be at least once in his /her career and being as young as he is I would'nt want to give crosby the chance to do it wearing the C on his canadian jersey in Canada, as for the picks the only player I would have left off and would never have him in a canadian jersey for the rest of his hockey career is Fleury ,I don't know about any of you but I will never forget when he gave the gold medal away when he was in net for the junior boys and I am sure they will never forget either , as for the rest of the roster picks lets let them win the gold and take there place at the top of the world once again with all of our support
Posted by: chris | Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 09:49 PM
Hey Andrew. Your knowledge of hockey could fit in a sippy cup.. Fisher was a legitimate contender and Philips is a very solid blue liner...your lousy team would love to have him.
Green is a defensive liability, as he showed in the playoffs and in clutch games this season. Doughty is head and shoulders better becasue he "thinks" about his game and plays his best against tough opposition. Thank goodness SY ignored the so-called experts on TSN who were lobbying for prima donnas like Pahneuf and "Vinnie" Heatly is enough for any coach to handle. As a Senator fan I hope Canada wins but Heatly sucks.
Posted by: Stewart Milloy | Friday, January 01, 2010 at 10:06 AM
whats up with Fischer? he's having ONE good year and suddenly he's God. Remember 06 when McCabe was having ONE good year and was put on the team. ya didn't fair so well. Pronger and Niedermeyer for shut down defence. lets not forget the offensive powers they will be facing. we don't need a Greene to score we need a Pronger to knock Ovie on his butt
Posted by: scott | Saturday, January 02, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Pronger is a terrible choice, he's like Ray Bourque who always made big mistakes at the worst times. This team might be good for an 80 game season, but it' doesn't have the firepower to win in the Olympics. This is a boring Ken Holland team, Yzerman should have shown better leadership. Picking a team because certain players are used to each other is a stupid way to pick a team. We want the best at all positions. Brodeur will have to be a giant to steal the gold.
