Barecelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has won FIFA's World Player of the Year award, which will bookend nicely with that Ballon d'Or he won as European Footballer of the Year last month.
What's great about Messi, aside form his mind-numbing soccer skills (remember THIS?) and overcoming childhood health problems, is the complete lack of drama or ego surrounding him as one of the world's best. While pundits the world over decry the downfall of world soccer into a hellhole of gargantuan player contracts and sky-rocketing transfer fees (all valid complaints), it's a strong statement that the world's best player seems like such an affable guy.
So, congrats to Mr. Messi ...
Oh, say, what are the odds someone breaks out a "Super Smurf" reference when Messi pulls on that Argentina blue in South Africa this summer?
