Tickertape

If you've ever walked around lower Manhattan, you've probably found yourself reading the sidewalk, where a cornucopia of names and dates are etched into the concrete of Broadway, all memorializing the various ticker tape parades that have strolled down the "Canyon of Heroes." Today, the New York Yankees add their name to that list for (presumably) the 27th time, with a parade that is reportedly to draw about a million fans and will culminate with Mayor Mike Bloomberg high-fiving Matsui & Co. at 1 pm.

So who else has got an NYC parade? Well, it's certainly an eclectic bunch. There's transatlantic lady-pilot Amelie Earhart, genius loony tune Leonardo DiCaprio Howard Hughes, golfer Bobby Jones, war-time leaders Winston Chruchill and Dwight Eisenhower, a handsomely coiffed JFK, and astronaut John Glenn (pictured above). Oh, and Albert Einstein got one, too. Add to that a laundry list of world leaders (Queen Marie of Romania? Check. Galo Plaza Lasso of Ecuador? Check. Pope John Paul II? Is a bear a Catholic?) and other championship sports teams -- hey, like the Mets! -- and you've got a lot of sidewalk squares to read while browsing fake designer purses and 9/11 tribute snowglobes.

Such a communal outpouring of joy is almost enough to make you like Yankee fans. Almost.
