Last night marked David Beckham's return to Los Angeles from a prolonged European stint, for a Galaxy exhibition 2-2 draw at home against -- funny enough -- AC Milan. Milan, you may recall, is where Beckham reluctantly returned from after a rather successful loan spell. But in yesterday's match, it seems the majority (or at least the loudest) of L.A. fans expressed their displeasure of Becks' desire to remain in Europe with a chorus of booing and signs of the "Go Home Fraud" variety. Some might see this as unreasonable and unfair of Galaxy fans, to treat a global superstar with such contempt, but if anything it's a step in the right direction to gain some international respect. If the soccer doesn't yet measure up to European or English standards, at least the fan support should try to. Many of the crappiest of teams over there still boast maniacal support (see: Millwall or Newcastle).

Sure, in reality, Beckham's reasoning to stay in Europe makes complete sense. Here's a guy who, despite his advanced age and over-exposed image, is actually playing quality soccer. There are a number of European and English sides that would be delighted to have him wear their jersey, and not just to hear the club shop register ring. The Beckham Experiment was worth a try, and there's every reason to believe he made the trek Stateside with the honest intention of riding out his career and perhaps boosting the sport's profile on this side of the Atlantic. But just because his current situation makes perfect logical sense, does NOT mean Galaxy fans should simply roll over and give him a free ride. Since when was soccer support logical?

Fans should keep on his back for the rest of the season and never let up. The odds of him wearing an LA shirt next year are as slim as his wife waist, so this is the supporters' last chance to show him that, while the soccer might be second-rate, the support is not. What's the worst that can happen? The constant goading might just motivate him -- as it seemed to last night -- and at the same time deepen the supporters' commitment by being another common cause under which to unite. So Galaxy fans, keep up the creative chants and mocking signs, and save the love for whomever the team buys with the buckets of money they get from selling your least favorite underwear model.

Fans? You call it "fans"?
The proper name is Hooligans.
Calling "names" is hooliganism. Beckham and any football star do not deserve that.
Do you realize that you actively support the hooliganism in USA?
And when someone will be killed then you can write - Beckham is the reason, Beckham is guilty, that's the result of the Beckham's experiment...
Instead asking to ban all these hooligans from any access to any LA Galaxy game, you describe them as heroes...
Good job... Keep trying!
The hooliganism cannot succeed without people like you....

So denny, I'd be interested to know what you call fans that boo at hockey games or any other sport? The key ingredient in hooliganism is violence, of which there was none reported at this game. May I suggest keeping the cement glue bottle a little further from your face next time?

Sorry folks; as hard as football people in this region try to get the sport generally accepted here, the rest of the world will care less until CONCACAF and the American FA take FIFA seriously.

U.S soccer sucks anyway, I never watch a game, I'd rather watch my daughter's u16 team,
they have skill and class. Must be the European blood. Hey Yanks stick to Bball and what you call football, what a joke, keep on tailgating yahoo.

DISGUSTING DISPLAY-- Soccer use to be the best played game in the world until all those second stringers came overseas, now it`s its clutch, grab, kick, trip, phoney dives complete with 15 roll overs, only to be running like a greyhound two seconds later, ref`s that lose control game after game.

Would you like me to go on?

Clean up the game for Pete`s sake

BEER is absolutely correct regarding hooligans. Denny is clueless.

Come on BEER - here we have a quality footballer who is looking to keep up his skills year round, and try to compete for a place in the England squad for South Africa 2010. He therefore has to be playing the highest level of football possible i.e. AC Milan or any other top european team.
And can you blame him for coming to the states and accepting the ridiculous $250m or whatever it was to join LA!? I'd take it!

Jon, agree with you 100 percent... but I'm not a Galaxy fan. Fans of that team have the right to express their disappointment and anger at a guy who seems to have taken the money and run... back to Europe. Or at least earned his $250M rather lackadaisically. I don't blame Beckham for his decision to leave, based on his play, it's the right move for him to try and get an England spot in 2010. But I also agree with Galaxy fans voicing their displeasure so mgmt knows never to go the vanity player route again, and instead spend their money on a player who will both help the team AND want to be there.

Beckham was booed because he hasn't been giving his full effort
in the MLS games.

I ran into the DC United team last weekend at LAX and one of the players
told me that Beckham floats in MLS games, rarely running all out.
That's simply disgraceful and unprofessional.

It reminds me of Vince in his last year as a Raptor or T-Mac when he was
on Orlando and wanted out but its harder to hide in b-ball than in soccer.

Correction: it's easier to float as a midfielder in soccer than as a starting SG/SF in the NBA.

European soccer may have skill, but class? Nope. The reason soccer is a second rate sport over here is that North American fans can't stand to watch athletes fish flopping dramatically all over the field, trying to draw penalties. Until the sport can eliminate that, it will never be popular in Canada and the US. Give me a good hockey game any day.

he shows the arrogance of players who have no respect for the fans.other sports figures who come to mind are hockey players such as sundin and heatly.the business of sports is ruining sports.

When Beckam was playing for the Galaxie he missed a lot of games because he said he had a sore leg. Then, when the season's over he jumps on a plane and for $20 million or so he's playing in Spain with no sore leg. Rather than help the North American league, he dissed the league and taken his unearned millions as well.

I think you're commentary is as pathetic as the $250 million contract. Before signing with the Galaxy, Beckham was not being used to his full potential by his RM coach. When you're playing in the top league and your play time is reduced dramatically, it affects your confidence. Look at Ronaldinho with AC Milan or Deco with Chelsea...great players who had reduced play time last season for reasons yet to be known. When confidence is low you tend to second guess everything and before you know it, you're out of the regular 11. Hence the International retirement as captain and the move from top league to...MLS. But playing with a top team with a coach who appreciates you as a player can do a lot for your confidence. I applaud his comeback to top league play and I wish him luck. You on the other hand are a pathetic excuse for journalism. It's bad enough that a player gets booed on the visitors pitch... but from your home fans. It's wrong. Encouraging this behaviour is worse. And if that is how you expect other top league players to join the MLS? Good luck. Bon voyage Becks! Buy off the remaining time in your contract and go play for real fans... fans who understand the sport.

Um bigmac, Milan is actually In Italy, not Spain.

and Beer, "what's the worst that could happen?" How about some bonehead with access to a gun, an we know how easy it is for anyone to get a gun in the USA, to go to a game and shoot Beckham. Some bonehead who takes your last paragraph further than you likely .

We all know how a hated argument can turn into a a fatal confrontation. And if alcohol is a factor, and I presume alchoholic drinks can be bought at or smuggled into games in LA, it is far more likely to become a violent confrontation.

Do you have any idea of the hatred and abuse David Beckham was subjected to after gettng sent off in a crucial World Cup game. Game after game fans supporting the oher team whenever and wherever Manchester United played the "fans" screamed vitriolic abuse at Beckham, attacking both the player himself and even his wife.

One even sank to the lowest of the low when he shouted " I hope your kid gets cancer." And that type of mentality is the one you are advocating. You are one of those who are hurting image of soccer in North America. You should be ashamed of yourself. But peope like you don't have the character to be ashamed.
